How AI Cuts Costs and Creates New Revenue for Irish Industry: The 2026 Numbers

AI applied to energy and carbon could generate US$1.3 trillion to US$2.6 trillion in new revenue and cost savings by 2030, says BCG. Here is where the money sits in an Irish plant, with sources: waste heat, EU ETS costs, biomethane and CBAM data.

Artificial intelligence applied to energy and carbon could generate US$1.3 trillion to US$2.6 trillion in additional revenue and cost savings by 2030, according to BCG. In an Irish dairy, food, pharmaceutical or cement plant, that money sits in four places: energy lost as waste heat (20% to 50% of industrial energy input, according to the US Department of Energy), EU ETS costs on large boilers, biomethane made from the plant's own residues, and verified data that lowers CBAM and reporting costs. Carbonova, a Brazil-based AI company for heavy industry, brings all four into one data layer. Here are the numbers, with sources.

The numbers at a glance
  • US$1.3tn to US$2.6tn: value AI could generate by 2030 through additional revenue and cost savings in corporate sustainability, while cutting emissions by 5% to 10% (BCG).
  • 20% to 50%: share of industrial energy input lost as waste heat (US Department of Energy).
  • 10% or more in 18 months: typical energy performance gain after implementing ISO 50001 (Natural Resources Canada).
  • 20 MW: combustion installations above this total rated thermal input fall under the EU ETS (EPA).
  • €82.32 per tonne: the CBAM certificate price for the third quarter of 2026, calculated from EU ETS auction prices (European Commission).
  • €0.54 per MWh: what EU ETS installations pay in natural gas carbon tax after relief, so there is no double charge (Revenue).
  • Up to 5.7 TWh: the 2030 ambition for biomethane in the National Biomethane Strategy.
Where the savings are

Waste heat. Between 20% and 50% of the energy a plant buys leaves as hot exhaust, cooling water and heated surfaces. Structured energy management pays back quickly: at nine US facilities certified under the Superior Energy Performance programme, energy cost savings averaged US$503,000 a year, with a 1.7-year payback (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory). Illustrative maths: a site with a €30 million annual energy bill that improves energy performance by 10% saves €3 million a year.

EU ETS allowances. Irish creameries and pasteurisers took in 8.84 billion litres of milk in 2025 (CSO), and much of that volume is heated, evaporated and dried with steam. Dairy and food sites whose combustion units exceed 20 MW of total rated thermal input are in the EU ETS, so every MWh of gas saved cuts both the gas bill and the allowances to surrender; the Q3 2026 auction average was €82.32 per tonne. Ireland's carbon tax of €71 per tonne applies to petrol and diesel, and ETS installations get relief on the natural gas carbon tax, so there is no double charge.

Cleaner electrified heat. Ireland's grid averaged 197.8 gCO2 per kWh in 2025 (SEAI, provisional), below the roughly 203.5 g per kWh from burning natural gas. An industrial heat pump that delivers several units of heat per unit of electricity therefore cuts the carbon of low-temperature process heat sharply.

CBAM and reporting costs. Irish importers of steel, aluminium, cement or fertilisers need EPA authorisation as CBAM declarants before their imports pass 50 tonnes in a calendar year; for hydrogen and electricity there is no 50-tonne exemption. Using suppliers' verified data instead of default values, which carry a mark-up of 10% in 2026, 20% in 2027 and 30% from 2028 (1% for fertilisers), lowers the bill. Under Omnibus I, the CSRD will cover companies with more than 1,000 employees and more than €450 million turnover once Ireland transposes it (deadline 19 March 2027).

Where the new revenue is
  • Biomethane from your own residues. Digesters can turn dairy wastewater, sludge and other organic residues into biogas or biomethane that replaces purchased gas and, at ETS sites, allowances. The National Biomethane Strategy sets an ambition of up to 5.7 TWh by 2030; the Renewable Heat Obligation bill was still being drafted in September 2026, so that obligation is not yet in force.
  • Allowances you no longer need. Under the EU ETS, allowances an installation does not need for compliance can be sold at market prices.
  • Recovered heat. Heat recovered from processes replaces purchased energy or can supply neighbouring users.
How Carbonova turns this into cash
  • CarbonOS: an AI-agent platform that connects SCADA, ERP (SAP, Oracle) and IoT data, keeps an auditable emissions inventory and generates reports for CBAM, CSRD and ISSB-based disclosures. Energy, carbon and revenue end up in one ledger. Explore the solutions.
  • Carbonova Build (early access): AI-first industrial engineering, with process simulation, pinch and heat-exchange analysis, advanced process control and prescriptive maintenance, to find and size the heat and energy a plant is losing. See Build.
  • Carbonova Sense (pilot stage): an edge-AI flare monitor that infers combustion state (lit and normal, smoking, degraded, flameout, venting or no flow) from thermal imaging, video and acoustics. Vented methane is calculated from process data during confirmed venting events. Sense is not a methane sensor. See Sense.
How much can a plant save with energy management?

Companies that implement ISO 50001 typically improve energy performance by 10% or more within the first 18 months, according to Natural Resources Canada. At nine facilities certified under the US Superior Energy Performance programme, energy cost savings averaged US$503,000 a year, with a 1.7-year payback.

Is my plant in the EU ETS?

If it runs combustion units with a total rated thermal input above 20 MW, it needs a greenhouse gas permit from the EPA and is in the EU ETS. ETS installations get relief on the natural gas carbon tax and pay €0.54 per MWh, so they do not pay twice for the same emissions.

Who needs CBAM authorisation in Ireland?

Importers of CBAM goods such as iron and steel, aluminium, cement and fertilisers must apply to the EPA as authorised declarants before their cumulative imports exceed 50 tonnes in a calendar year; the 50-tonne exemption does not apply to hydrogen or electricity. The first annual CBAM declaration for 2026 imports is due by 30 September 2027.

Is Carbonova Sense a methane detector?

No. Sense infers a flare's combustion state on the device. For confirmed venting events, vented methane mass is calculated from SCADA flow, duration and gas composition. It does not measure methane in the air and is not a leak detection system.
